On February 22, 2022, the Shanghai Library (Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of Shanghai) announced a new library logo and the list of invited artists in its new East Building.
The new LOGO has adopted the triangular shape of the original logo, but with a more concise and plane geometric design, presenting the main visual pattern that resembles a sail, and demonstrating the idea that the Shanghai Library will uphold its original intention, face challenges and embark on an expedition to the era of mega-reading. The multiple images contained in the LOGO are not only an interpretation of the era of mega-reading, but also an interpretation of the 3i transformation strategy of "intelligence, inclusiveness and interconnection" implemented by the Shanghai Library towards this era.
The LOGO uses curved lines to create the image of turning the pages of a book. At the top of the logo, there seems to be a bird flying out of the book, full of wisdom and self-confidence. It shows that the Shanghai Library will inherit the successful experience of the past and embrace the wisdom development of the future, empower culture with technology, and provide readers with convenient, intelligent and mega-reading innovative services.
The LOGO is symmetrical on the left and right, showing two shades of blue, resembling a bird on the tree lit by the sun, and implying that the Shanghai Library will make every effort to promote the coordinated development of services in the main library and the East Building, take into consideration of both public reading promotion and professional library and information services, and create an inclusive environment for people of all ages and diverse knowledge needs.
The release of the new LOGO demonstrates that the strategy of wisdom, inclusiveness and interconnection will lead the Shanghai Library to develop into a new smart hybrid library. According to the interpretation of Chen Chao, Director of the Shanghai Library, the simple and vivid lines of the LOGO not only echo the figure of modern sculpture cut by the East Building with its inclining facade, but also imply that the Shanghai Library is like an ocean and will be committed to connecting every information island, and connecting people, space, media, content and knowledge that are like hundreds of rivers flowing into the ocean, and finally merging into an era of mega-reading in which print book reading and digital reading are integrated, physical space experience is integrated with cloud-based online interaction, and librarians’ creativity is linked with intelligent tools.
The new LOGO of the Shanghai Library was created by Chen Youjian, a famous designer, and the entire visual identity system was completed by Shen Haopeng, a local designer, who is familiar with the development of Shanghai culture.
At the news briefing, the library also announced the "List of Specially Invited Artists in the East Building". These well-known contemporary artists at home and abroad have been invited to create works based on the characteristics of the library since the beginning of the construction of the East Building, integrating the beauty of art into the reading space. As Shen Fan, a local Shanghai artist, mentioned in his dialogue with the librarians, art connects the past, present and future, so does reading; art is a mirror image of the world, and so does reading. Reading in art and feeling art in reading are not only the responsibility of world-class urban libraries, but also the due result of reading in connecting all things in the era of mega-reading.
