The major form of early book exchange activities of public libraries is the official and batch exchange among libraries. The purpose is to mutually complete the collections. As the continuous development of internet technology and the rise of sharing economy concept, the book exchange platform for individual appears in book exchange activities, and exchange forms and channels also become more colorful and diversified.
1、Book Floating
Readers offer their idle books to other readers at no cost. The reader receive the book and pass it to next reader after finishing reading. There is no fixed area and time. The form of book exchange is similar to the floating bottle, which is the reason for the title Book Floating. The Books coming and going idle book floating platform of Jinan Library is a successful case.
2、Pattern of Book Market
One is using currency as the medium of exchange. The library provides a platform for deal and exchange ,and recruits vendors to set up stalls. Vendors price the idle books in their own stalls. For instance, Wenzhou Library held Wen Book Market.
The other is making exchange in the form of barter. Readers offer books in exchange for book coupons or points and use the coupons to make book exchange. This pattern is pure barter, not involving currency transaction. In April, 2011, Beijing Book Exchange Bazaar was first held in Beijing, hosted by Capital Library Alliance, and organized by Capital Library, National Library, libraries of districts and counties in Beijing. There were over 1000 participant readers on the site, exchanging near ten thousand books.
3、Donation Book Exchange Center
Some domestic public libraries set up Donation Book Exchange Centers and specially allocated a fixed area, formulated measures on book exchange, provided free and daily book exchange service to the public on basis of library’s readers. For example, Sun Yat-sen Library of Guangdong Province, Shenzhen Library, Dongguan Library, Zhaoqing Library and other public libraries set up Donation Book Exchange Centers.
