In the east end of the Century Avenue, in the deep city forest, the construction of the Shanghai Library East Building is to be soon completed. It has seven stories above the ground and two below. From the first to the fifth floor, there are barrier free reading room, senior citizen reading room, oriental academy, reading square, law pavilion, design library and global city pavilion.
The Shanghai Library East Building is located in the Pudong New District, with a total floor area of 115,000 square meters. It sits next to the largest city garden in Shanghai — Century Garden, which covers an area of 1,400,000 square meters.
The building looks like a sculpture floating over the canopy in a garden.
The Shanghai Library East Building will function as an intelligent compound library in the all-media era. The East Building and the Building at the Huaihai Road are two spaces standing on the banks of the Huangpu River, echoing each other, conductive to more accessible knowledge and more convenient information sharing and communication. Functionally, the Shanghai Library East Building will focus on providing the public with diversified, themed, experiential modern library information services, and making efforts to build a new generation reading and cultural communication center. The building at the Huaihai Road will make gradual adjustments to provide professional, knowledge-based, research-based modern library information services to organizations and readers, as well as making efforts to transform into a new generation academic communication center serving professional researches.
In addition to the atrium space for exploring new collections, visiting exhibitions and taking part in activities, the Shanghai Library East Building also sets a series of open reading spaces around the building. Readers can see this city from various locations of the library.
Every floor has different themed reading spaces, which are expecting readers’ explorations.
