Suochengli Neighborhood Library, Yantai, Shandong, Is Included as the Best Practice by IFLA’s New Book

On July 1, 2021, IFLA online released the publication information of its new book: New Libraries in Old Buildings — Creative Reuse (by Petra hauke, Karen Latimer, Robert Niess; Press: Berlin / Munich: de Gruyter Saur, 2021; ISBN:9783110679663). The book contains the best library cases from all over the world. They represent all kinds of libraries in different historical environments, including urban libraries and rural libraries. These libraries attach great importance to the sustainability of architectural architecture and interior design in common. Suochengli Neighborhood Library, Yantai, Shandong is one of the selected cases.

 

Suochengli Neighborhood Library was originally located in the backyard of local Zhang Ancestral Hall. The Zhang Ancestral Hall is the place where Zhang Family's ancestors are worshipped and worshipped from generation to generation, and its backyard is a resting place for the descendants of Zhang Family who come to worship their ancestors. The Zhang Ancestral Hall was built in Xuande period of Ming Dynasty. The design philosophy of "old-and-new coexist" was adopted in the building, which retained the original courtyard, house shape and wall texture to the maximum extent.
