In recent years, public libraries have been converged as part of the national public culture service system, expanding its boundaries in the spacing of facilities and organization of activities.
Facility convergence
The convergence of libraries and public culture services includes establishing functional spaces inside public libraries. The National Library of China set up the National Museum of Classic Books in its southern part. The under-construction Shanghai Library East will set up the Shanghai Center of Local History, to make better use and publicity of the resources.
Such convergence also includes setting up reading rooms at other public venues, providing book reading and lending services. Suzhou Library has set up its branches in Confucious' temple, Suzhou Women and Children Activity Center, the Children’s Palace and some hospitals, making itself everywhere.
The convergence also includes the co-construction of libraries and other cultural facilities, making it easier for citizens to have a one-stop public culture service.
Service convergence: Diversified library cultural activities
The convergence means a public library turns into a venue offering comprehensive public cultural services, making the reading service more appealing.
Shanghai Library has organized the “Reading Marathon” competition, encouraging readers to finish a certain number of reading mission within a limited period of time. Besides, it has also held many other cultural activities including hosting a concert or watch a movie in a library, learning painting from volunteers and writing poetic couplet.
