Recent years have witnessed the wave of construction of theme libraries in China, which has shown a gratifying situation. At present, the construction of theme libraries can be summarized into five modes.
1. It is funded by the government, managed by public libraries, and resources, funds, and personnel are uniformly deployed by the library. This mode is the most widely used. For example, the Dongguan Comic Library, established in 2004, is the first animation-themed library in China’s mainland.
2. It is established and managed by social forces such as individuals, enterprises, foundations, or civil society organizations through crowdfunding, donation, sole proprietorship, and venture capital. For example, thee "99-person library" was built through crowdfunding, becoming a deep-reading platform in the field of creativity and art.
3. The government purchases services from professional social institutions and entrusts all or part of the business of the theme library. Purchasing content includes library construction, daily operation management, and special services. For example, the Beijing Brick Reading Space is located in the Wansong Old Pagoda, a national key cultural relics protection unit in Beijing Brick Tower Hutong, and has a collection of nearly 40,000 volumes of literatures “created by Beijingers, or about Beijingers, or in Beijing.”
4. The government contributes to the independent construction, and the social forces assist the theme library operation through human and financial resources, such as the Environmental Theme Branch of Hangzhou Library.
5. The government builds and operates the theme library with social forces through contracts. For example, Wenzhou Clothing Library was jointly built by Wenzhou Library and Wenzhou Clothing Chamber of Commerce in 2004.
