Shanghai Library hosts book exhibition highlighting hidden gems
2018-08-06
An exhibition that highlighted “hidden-gem” books was held at Shanghai Library from August 4 to 12 in 2018.
The exhibition was categorized into three sections: Chinese books, foreign books and e-books. Librarians selected the books based on factors including the author, the publisher and the year of publishing, while taking into consideration the proportion of social sciences and science and technology.
The standard to pick up Chinese books is being popular, readable and rated above 8.3 in China’s book review website Douban.com. For foreign books, they should contain more expertise and rated over 4.4 in Amazon. Some of them were awarded works, including Before We Were Yours which won the Hugo Award, The Sixth Extinction which was one of the top 100 recommendations by the New York Times in 2017, and The Luminaries which won The Man Booker Prize in 2013.
Shanghai Library recommended these books based on the data of borrowed books. All the books exhibited were not borrowed by readers for at least a year for different reasons. Some books might have many versions. Some readers tend to read books at the library. The exhibition aimed to guide readers to find the “hidden gems” among a huge collection of books based on the recommendation of librarians.
