China’s First Kunqu Library Opens
The Suzhou Wuzhong District Yunhe Library, also known as China’s first subject library on Kunqu, opened to the public on July 21, 2017. Founded to pass forward Kunqu, or Kun Opera, one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera, the Library is responsible for the collection, custodian and promotion of Kunqu-related publications. So far the collection has grown to some 20,000 volumes. The comprehensive collection of materials on this particular subject is nothing but a daunting task. Most are commercially unavailable. Some of the precious holdings are donated by famous Kunqu performers, scholars or dramatists. The Library also organizes workshops, lectures, exhibitions attended by well-known performers and cultural celebrities to promote the Kunqu culture. |
