The 14th National Reading Investigation Results Published
On April 18, 2017, China Academy of Press and Publication published the 14th national reading investigation results, which shows that, in 2016, Chinese adult citizens’ comprehensive reading rate was 79.9%, digital reading rate, 68.2%, and book reading rate, 58.8%, all increased compared with the previous year. In 2016, every Chinese adult citizen read 7.86 books, with mobile reading rate of 66.1%, increased for 8 years in a row.
According to the research on Chinese citizens’ favorite reading modes, 51.6% adult citizens enjoy “reading paper books”, 9.8% adult citizens, “online reading”, 33.8% adult citizens, “mobile reading”, 3.8% adult citizens, “e-reading”, and 1.0% adult citizens, “downloading and printing materials from the Internet”. In today’s world where digital reading is very popular, paper books are still welcomed by more than half of the readers. This means that traditional paper books are still alive.
Generally, the daily time spent by Chinese adult citizens in contacting new media has been prolonged, among which, mobile reading time has been significantly lengthened, with the daily WeChat reading time per capita being 26 minutes; in traditional media, except for paper book reading time, paper newspaper reading time has been shortened.
According to relevant investigations, there is difference between different demographic groups in terms of mobile reading rate. In adult urban citizens, adult male citizens’ mobile reading rate is higher than that of female ones; in adults, the younger the group, the higher the mobile reading rate, with the mobile reading rate of the group aged 18-29 being the highest, which is 92.8%; the next is the group aged 30-39, whose mobile reading rate is 87.3%. The mobile reading rate of the group aged more than 60 is greatly different from that of young and middle-aged group.
