The Shanghai Library Pudong Premises Expected Completed in 2020
Danish firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects recently announced that it had won the bid for the architectural design of the project of Shanghai Library Pudong Premises.

Making of the overall design scheme is now underway, and the preliminary design is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2017. The new library is expected to open in 2020.

“A public library should be a place for people to stay and to be inspired to explore,” said Chris Hardie, a SHL partner. “The interior (of the new Shanghai Library) will be arranged around a generous atrium with 3 staggered reading rooms, connecting different function areas, all opening up towards a series of adjacent views – the Century Park to the east, the new Library Park to the south and the city s landscape of Pudong New District to the northwest. It will not only be a place for the storage and lending of books, it will also be a place for more opportunities.”

Used to be a place for holding collections and afterwards opening collections to the public , the library has now evolved into a new stage of facilitating connections and communications of users with different knowledge and learning experience, placing focus on data, multimedia and people. And this is the basis on which the new Shanghai Library is to be designed and built, by eliminating the outdated mindset and being more oriented to people.
