The 2016 Influence Report of the Chinese Books in Worldwide Libraries Released
| The newest report on the influence of the Chinese publications collected by worldwide libraries was published on August 26 in Beijing, marking the fifth consecutive release since 2012, as a result of a year-on-year review by accessing the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) database, which involves all publications from some 600 publishing houses based in the mainland of China collected by libraries all over the world in the year of 2015. The report, concluding two ranking lists by publishers and libraries, has witnessed the joint efforts by the China Publishing Group Corp.-based China Publishing & Media Journal, the China National Publications Import & Export Group Corp. and the Beijing Foreign Languages University. The report reveals that a new high of 70,672 titles of Chinese publications were collected by the world’s libraries in 2015, 44% up from 46,359 titles of the previous year, maintaining the two-digit growth momentum over the recent years. The traditional strength and reputation of a publisher is still criteria to the rapid and constant growth, and professional publishing houses for chemical and construction industries are leading the growing tide. Titles of the Chinese contemporary literature have seen an increasing worldwide influence, and worth mentioning are the works of the young authors and the avant-garde “internet literatures” increasingly coming into the view of the overseas librarians. The Chinese presses are becoming more progressive and much savvier in international marketing and promotion, the report says, adding that the thematic publishing strategy is apparently the most important factor to the successful expansion of the publication varieties. “Bedside Shore”, a novel authored by Yan Geling, was introduced to 52 overseas libraries, the first on the ranking list by library. And the Chinese contemporary literature titles are the most preferred by all involved libraries of the report. The task force responsible for making the report has specifically indicated the necessity for perfecting the data and indices involved, stating that the influence shall include the exported copyrights in Chinese language, as well as the foreign language publications sponsored by China-initiated translation projects. |
