Should we still be reading Shakespeare? – Shakespeare and a spirit of Renaissance

14:00, May 21, 2016
Lectured by: Tan Yingzhou, Professor, School of Foreign Languages and Literature, Fudan University

In his masterpiece “Hamlet”, Shakespeare wrote: “What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties … how like an angel in apprehension, how like a god!” This is followed however, by the paradox of “And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?”

To start with the historic background of Renaissance, Mr. Tan will talk about the spirit lined through Shakespeare’s plays, that is, an extremely calm and profound thinking on the duality of the human condition and human nature.
