The exhibition will display nearly 100 old maps and literatures carefully chosen from millions of collections of Vatican Library. It is the first time that these precious exhibits from the oldest library in Europe have been shown in the Mainland, Macao, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They were prepared from the 12th century to the 19th century. On the exhibits and their subjects, a 2-day international symposium will be held, where experts on the history of Sino-Western cultural exchange, old maps, and literatures will discuss academic issues and negotiate on cooperation.
In a speech delivered at the opening ceremony, Doc. Wu Zhiliang introduced that, “MUST is actively collecting, sorting out and publishing the old maps related to Macao from the archives and libraries all over the world. It is a good thing for the academic circles and a great contribution to Macao.” Vatican Cardinal Joseph Frings introduced the history and collections of Vatican Library and the exhibits for the exhibition. He further said, “Since the mid-16th century, Macao has played an important role in the exchange between eastern and western countries. The exhibition is the first fruit of the cooperation between Vatican Library and MUST.”
At the same time when meeting its own teaching and scientific research demands, MUST Library also renders services to the local people, and actively takes part in sharing and cooperating in international library resources among the Mainland, Macao, Hong Kong and Taiwan. As a library for Papa’s information, Vatican Library is claimed to be one of the oldest and the most important libraries in the Western world for its enormous collections of the spiritual wealth and cultural treasures of the humans.
