A Visit from the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences
On May 5th, 2015, a 3-person delegation led by Mr. Efremenko, deputy director of the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences paid a visit to the Shanghai Library, in company with Bai Xiaomei, director of the Library of the Shanghai International Studies University. Dr. Wu Jianzhong, director of the Shanghai Library received and held talks with the foreign guests, together with the library staff from the Administrative Office, the Historical Documentation Center and the International Cooperation Division.
As the largest scientific information centre in the field of humanism and social science in Russia, the Institute of Scientific Information for Social Sciences plays a dominant role in the local academic community of humanities. The library of this Institute, founded in 1918, suffered from a big fire in January this year, which caused the destruction of more than 2 million books and another 3 million books damaged by water used to extinguish the fire.
At present, the Institute is actively looking for aid from libraries of home and abroad, among which the Shanghai Library is expected to provide assistances in digital resource sharing, book exchange and document restoration. Meanwhile, Mr. Efremenko expressed the wish to establish a long-term partnership with the Shanghai Library through providing the digital resources of Chinese documents and Russian nationals documents collected in the Institute.
Dr. WU extended sympathy and sorrow for the great loss suffered by the Institute Library and showed the willingness to carry out further cooperation and exchange by offering necessary aid and help. After the conversation, the guests, in company with Dr. WU, looked around the Shanghai Library, and focused their visit on the Friendship Library, the Innovation Space, the New Technology Demo Center, the Ancient Book Restoration Room and the Catalogue Hall.
