The Eternal Charm of the Qi Style in Beijing Opera

Introduction
Chen Shaoyun, the famous leading Qi style performer of Beijing opera who just won the "Shanghai Literature and Arts Award for Outstanding Contribution" will be a guest in the Shanghai Library, conducting a dialogue on the “eternal charm of the Qi style” with Mr. Xie Chunyan, a famous art critic. He will begin with his life of loving the Beijing opera and learning the performance art, and through the comparison and presentation of a few episodes of the traditional Beijing opera, he will demonstrate the relationship between the Qi style art with the Shanghai school of the Beijing opera, as well as his great contribution to the inheritance and innovation of the traditional art of Beijing Opera.

About the Guest Speakers
Chen Shaoyun, a national level actor and Qi style laosheng. He is Vice-Chairman of the Shanghai Dramatists Association, Vice President of Zhou Xinfang Art Research Association and a national representative of the intangible cultural heritage (Beijing opera) project. His representative works are "Raccoon for a Prince", "Xiao He", "Prime Minister Humpbacked Liu", "Dongpo Feast", "Xu Ce Scurries", "Chu and Han" and so on. He firmly grasps the "art of Qi style" with vivid characterization and lively presentation. His performance is smooth and neat, demonstrating the inherent artistic charm of the Qi style. He is considered a representative heir to the Qi style on today’s stage of the Beijing opera.


Xie Chunyan is mainly engaged in Chinese painting, comics, illustrations in literary works and art critism. His painting has a unique style and is rich in literary flavor and humorous taste. He is regarded by critics as one of the representatives of "the new literati painting". Since 1980 he has been invited to hold solo exhibitions and lectures in the United States, Singapore, Japan and other countries. In 2002 he was given the title of Artist with Special Achievements by San Francisco city government. He has published Xie Chunyan’s Paintings, Xie Chunyan’s Comments on Art and many other books.
