Society of China and the Magazine of Science” Opened at Shanghai Library
Shanghai is an important place in China where Western and Eastern cultures meet and one of the major centers of New Culture Movement. 100 years ago, Science and Youth Magazine (later changed to New Youth) were born in Shanghai. They are two important magazines to publicize science and democracy in China, thus playing an important role in ideological enlightenment in the history of Chinese cultures. The magazine of Science founded by the Science Society of China is a magazine on natural science that boasts the longest history and a far-reaching influence in China. To commemorate the centenary of the Science Society of China and the magazine of Science, a memorial exhibition will be held in Fl. 1 Directory Hall (Modern Times) of Shanghai Library.
Mr. Ren Hongjuan, the founder of the Science Society of China and the magazine of Science, created the predecessor of Shanghai Library and was active in the cause of library. In 1919, he established in Nanking a library to collect publications on science and technology; in 1929, he established Mingfu Library, which is one of the earliest science libraries in China. After 1949, he acted as curator of Shanghai Library of Science and Technology. The library was one of the 4 libraries merged into Shanghai Library in 1958. The literatures collected by the Science Society of China and Mingfu Library have now become important collections of Shanghai Library.
The exhibition will be closed at the end of November.
