During the “Public Library Service Publicity Week” from the end of May to the beginning of June, Shanghai Library cooperated with several local libraries such as Yangpu District Library, Hongkou District Library, and Jing’an District Library to allow the readers to borrow books in foreign languages through “One-card-through” system. In the past two months, a total of 3683 books in foreign languages served this purpose.
These books are mainly in literature, history, geography, culture, science, education, and sports, accounting for 90%. According to statistics, after launched on June 1, this service was warmly welcomed. For example, among 1020 books in foreign languages prepared by Shanghai Library, nearly 1000 have been borrowed by the readers. The usage rate of the books in foreign languages prepared by 7 local libraries in Shanghai is nearly 60%, and the circulation rate of the books in June and July is more than 1.7. The readers are mainly aged 16-46, and more than 50% have bachelor’s degree or above, with female readers slightly more than male ones. It is reported that Shanghai Library will increase books in popular science, architectural art, and life as the circumstance requires.
