2013 Questionnaire Survey on Jiangsu Residents’ Reading Habits Is Finished

According to the 2013 questionnaire survey on Jiangsu residents’ reading habits conducted by China Press and Publication Research Institute as entrusted by the Publicity Department under Jiangsu Provincial CPC Committee, Jiangsu Provincial Office of Civilization, Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Press and Publication, Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Statistics, and Jiangsu Provincial Office of Nationwide Reading, in 2013, the comprehensive reading rate of Jiangsu residents is 82.2%, and each adult resident reads 7.01 books. 74.4% of the residents recognize the importance of reading, among whom, female residents know more about the importance of reading. The survey results show that, the books read by adult residents are mainly bought at their own expenses, with the proportion of 69.1%. Averagely, each household in Jiangsu Province possesses 52.43 books, which is higher than the average nationwide level (i.e., 34.51 books).

According to the 2013 questionnaire survey, the most important reason for Jiangsu residents’ unreading books is that they have no reading habits, with 35.9% choosing the item of “have no reading habits or do not like reading”. Therefore, to form reading habits plays a vital role in reading. The second important reason for unreading is that adult residents are “too busy to read”, accounting for 33.4%. Among the factors that affect reading, 10.5% of the residents chose the item of “have no time to read due to surfing the Internet or playing games”. The survey results also show that, the fact that book contents or reading environments do not satisfy the residents’ demands also accounts for unreading.
