For the first time, Shanghai Library issued an analytical report on the book circulations of Shanghai Library and Shanghai Central Libraries. The data mentioned in the report are from the book circulation journals, booklist records, and self-made records in the libraries’ automatic management systems, and the records on the readers in the libraries’ reader management systems. According to relevant statistics, in 2013, a total of 44,320,000 books was borrowed from Shanghai Library and Shanghai Central Libraries; there were 605,000 readers visiting these libraries; one reader borrowed 26.06 books averagely, and more than half of the readers borrowed over 14 books.
Reader’s Card helps enlarge membership
Shanghai Library cooperated with Shanghai Municipal Education Commission to become the first library in China where, with an electronic student’s card, students can borrow books through "One-card-through" system at local public libraries. From June to the end of 2014, more than 1,300,000 primary and middle school students can borrow, with an electronic student’s card, books from over 270 public libraries and primary service points in Shanghai, which greatly facilitates their after-class reading. From June 1, this service will be piloted at Shanghai Library, Xuhui District Library, libraries in Xuhui District, and primary service points; local senior middle school students (Grades 1 and 2) will become the first to experience the convenience of the "One-card-through" system.
The increasing “value” of Reader’s Card
During the week, Shanghai Library will cooperate with Yangpu District Library, Hongkou District Library, Jing’an District Library, Putuo District Library, Minhang District Library, Zhabei District Library, and Songjiang District Library to allow the readers to borrow leisure books in foreign languages through "One-card-through" system. Now, Shanghai Library and the 7 local libraries have about 3,000 books in foreign languages for the "One-card-through" system, including: 1. Classic literatures such as Penguin Modern Classics and Signet Classics; 2. Works of the winners of Nobel Literature Prize and Pulitzer Prize; 3. Bestsellers reported by The New York Times, Publisher’s Weekly, and The Library Magazine. In the future, more books in foreign languages will be served for this purpose. Like books in Chinese, books in foreign languages can also be borrowed through the "One-card-through" system. Maximally, 10 books in Chinese and foreign languages can be borrowed with one reader’s card.
“Shanghai Library Lectures” focus on new hot-spot issues
During the week, lectures will be held at Shanghai Library on new hot-spot issues including Chinese classics, haze prevention and control, and new energy vehicles through themes and platforms such as Popular Science Series, Pioneer Career, DeTao Master’s Lectures, and Oriental Press.
Digital reading explores new modes
Shanghai Library launched book borrowing service equipped with “Love Reading” digital reading self-service machine, with which more than 20,000 popular e-books can be downloaded. After downloading and visiting “Citizen’s Digital Reading”, the readers can read the whole book on the mobile terminal by scanning 2-D code.
The readers will have access to the network resources of the historical literature of Shanghai Library. As the first step, Shanghai Library has launched 21 digital resources of online historical literature that can be stored and taken publicly at home and abroad. The readers can search these literature by literature type, database type, or language through the “resources guide” platform of a named computer.
