2013 Reading Report of Shanghai Public Libraries" Released
Recently, the Shanghai Library issued the "2013 Reading Report of Shanghai Public Libraries", providing detailed statistics and analysis of the overall operation of the Shanghai Central Library system, as well as of readers, book circulatoin, e-library and others. The following figures are taken from the "Report".

At the end of 2013, the Shanghai Central Library "One-card-through" service system comprises 250 institutions, including one main library, one municipal branch, 22 district (county) branches, 212 neighborhood (township) service points, one university library, 3 special libraries and 10 other service point. There are altogether 294 service outlets.

At the end of 2013, the number of readers holding valid library cards reached nearly 1.92 million.

Among the registered readers in the “One-card-through” system, young adults aged 20-40 are the majority, accounting for 61.2%. Of children under the age of 14, the largest percentage are elementary school pupils, accounting for 66.6%. There is a rathre balanced proportion between men and women readers, with male readers accounting for 49.95% and female readers 50.05%.

By the end of 2013, the 1.92 million readers with the active library registration are from more than 100 countries and regions, including Japan, Korea, Russia, India, Canada, USA, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain and Italy in Europe.

Since 2009, the circulation of books in the entire Shanghai Central Library system has been showing a steady growth trend. In 2013, the amount of circulation reached 44.32 million, with an increase of 17.5%.

In 2013, 605,000 readers borrowed books from the Shanghai Central Library, and the average loan amount was 26.06. More than half of the readers borrowed over 14 items and the largest amount of books borrowed by a single reader was 2,846!

83.8% readers only borrowed books from a single branch, but 350 readers had been to more than 10 branches, and one reader visited 81 branches.

In 2013, the Shanghai Library acquired 357,954 titles of new e-books, 1,250 Internet serial novels, nearly 2,000 titles of newspapers and periodicals in the Moxiang Chinese Newspaper Database and Dooland Periodical Database. 

Since February 2009, the Shanghai Library has offered the E-reader loan service, which has been well received by the general public. Currently there are altother E-readers in 6 brands and 13 models available for loan. The High-Tech Demo Center on the third floor of the Shanghai Library also offers on-site display and reading experience of E-readers of 35 brands and 93 models. As a promotion project of the E-library in the Shanghai Library, the E-reader loan service had been extended to 18 district (county) libraies by the end of 2013.
