New Year paintings (nian hua) belong to the Chinese folk paintings created for the traditional Spring Festival. It’s customary for Chinese to buy New Year Paintings upon each Spring Festival and put them at home, hoping for good luck and happiness in the coming year. In order to introduce this folk art to more people, the Shanghai Library and the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts jointly host the “Exhibition of Yichengyong’s New Year Paintings from Yangliuqing Town of Tianjin Province and the Excellent New Year Paintings collected in the Shanghai Library" from 18 to 27 January. At this exhibition, the organizer selected over 80 Yichengyong’s New Year paintings from Yangliuqing of Tianjin, and 28 excellent Shanghai local New Year paintings collected in the Shanghai Library, demonstrating the category and development of Chinese wood-block New Year paintings.
