Once happened, the historic course will be gone forever with the lapse of time. What remains is merely people’s various “narrations” based on their perceptions, memories, judgments and “imaginations” of the past. The wisdom of reading history books is to find in these colorful narrations an insight with which history can be interpreted in many different ways.
Yao Dali is a professor of Chinese History and Geography Research Institute under Fudan University specialized in the history of the Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1206-1368) and the history and geography of China’s frontier regions. The published theses and comments of his have been compiled into such books as Ten Lectures on the History of China’s Northern Ethnic Groups, The Wisdom of Reading History Books, and The Social Systems, Politics and Cultures of the Mongolian Ethnic Group and the Yuan Dynasty.
