Famous Chinese-American Writer Yu Lihua’s Manuscripts Entered the Shanghai Library Collection

At 16:00 on June 9, the ceremony for the donation of Yu Lihua’s manuscripts was held at the Shanghai Library. Zhou Demin, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Library and Director of the Chinese Cultural Celebrities Manuscripts Library, Shen Liyun, Director of the International Cooperation Division, Huang Xiangong, Director of the Historical Documentation Center and Li Yansheng, Yu Lihua’s old friend and former President of the Shanghai Polytechnic University attended the ceremony. The ceremony was chaired by Huang Xiangong, Deputy Director of the Chinese Cultural Celebrities Manuscripts Library.

Ms. Yu Lihua donated 8 items, including the original manuscripts of Seeing San Francisco Again, Mou Tianlei Thirty-five Years Later and Yu Lihua’s Collected Essays, as well as published works with her autographs. Yu Lihua was born in Shanghai and spent her childhood in Ningbo, Zhejiang. She entered the Department of Journalism, University of California in the United States after graduating from the Taiwan University, and received a Master's degree. In 1956, she won the first prize of the Samuel Goldwyn Creative Writing Award established by MGM at the University of California. Later, she taught Chinese literature at SUNY Albany and was Director of the Chinese Research Institute at the university. Ms Yu Lihua is the pioneer of writing on the theme of Taiwan students in the United States, and is the author of several well-received works.

Ms. Yu Lihua came to attend the ceremony deliberately, bringing five children and grandchildren with her. She emotionally recalled her own upbringing and affectionate attachment to the motherland. She regards the donation of her manuscripts to the Chinese Cultural Celebrities Library as a realization of the "Return" wish of an overseas Chinese. She thanked the Manuscripts Library for the recognition given to her manuscripts. Ms Yu's children and grandchildren expressed their respect for the Chinese culture and a strong interest in learning Chinese.

Deputy Director Zhou Deming expressed sincere thanks to Ms Yu Lihua. He said in his speech that Ms Yu Lihua’s works on the theme of Chinese students in the United States enjoy a high reputation at home and abroad, and she is recognized as a pioneer of overseas student literature. In particular, he mentioned that when a friend in Beijing heard Ms Yu intended to donate her manuscripts to the Shanghai Library, he immediately cited a few famous quotations in her works and gave high praises. Her fans attending the ceremony came up with their collections of Ms Yu’s writings and requested her autographs. She was very much surprised and moved. On behalf of the Manuscripts Library, Director Zhou said the library is always ready to welcome Ms Yu Lihua to visit the Shanghai Library and "see" her manuscripts.

Miss Yu Lihua’s donation is another important event in the " 2013 Shanghai LibraryAnnual Service Awareness Week", during which many celebrities at home and abroad donated their manuscripts to the Shanghai Library.
