The brasiliana library at USP campus built by the rodrigo mindlin loeb and eduardo de almeida Architects is among the world's largest libraries. It has a total of 17,000 titles in 60,000 volumes in its collection, including some of the rarest books in Brazil. In 1999, Jose Mindlin, a Brazilian businessman and bibliophiles entrusted his grandchildren and friends to build the “largest library with the biggest collection in Brazil” at the University of Sao Paulo. This concrete building covers an area of 22,000 square meters. In addition to reading rooms and public halls, it also houses the Brazilian Research Institute, a bookstore, a cafe, an exhibition hall and an auditorium that can accommodate 300 people. It seems each section of the building is separated from the other, but the roofs are linked. There is a glass sunroof with UV filters and perforated metal plates in the center of the library, both to ensure there is enough natural light in the building and to avoid the glaring sunlight. The specially designed photovoltaic energy matrix can meet the energy needs of the daily operation. As the library covers a large area, the designers have deliberately planted hundreds of trees around the building and covered the ground with a lot of green vegetation, in order to create a pleasant environment. |
