The “2013 Exhibition of the Annual Selection of Prints” jointly organized by the Chinese Cultural Celebrities Manuscripts Library of the Shanghai Library and the Print Art Section of the Shanghai Artists Association opened on May 14 in the first exhibition hall of the Shanghai Library. The opening ceremony was chaired by Huang Xiangong, Director of the Center for Historical Documentation and Deputy Director of the Chinese Cultural Celebrities Manuscripts Library. Wu Jianzhong, Director of the Shanghai Library, Lu Zhiping, Deputy Director of the Print Art Section of the Chinese Artists Association and Zhou Guobin, Deputy Director of the Print Art Section of the Shanghai Artists Association gave speeches. More than 100 artists, art professors and students, including Lu Zhiping, Zhang Songzu, Wang Jie and etc. attended the opening ceremony.
As a type of art most closely related to the library, the print is one of the main targets for art collection in libraries overseas. Over the past five years, the Shanghai Library and the Shanghai Artists Association have worked together to promote the development of print art in Shanghai, and have successfully held five “annual exhibitions of selected prints”, winning the praise of the general public and readers. This year’s solicitation of prints received a positive response and enthusiastic support from many printmakers. Through the joint efforts of all parties, the organizers received altogether 90 prints from 67 artists. This year’s collection of prints have a significantly improved quality, and the number of works that had been on display at important domestic and international print exhibitions has reached a record high. In addition to the carefully selected 40 works, this exhibition also featured a number of outstanding works from the previous exhibitions, with a total of 54 works on display, representing the highest level of contemporary print art creation in Shanghai.
