Annual Conference of the China Society for Library Science Advocated "Reading for All"

On November 7, the three-day "2013 Annual Conference of the China Society for Library Science and the Chinese Library Exhibition" was held in Shanghai. Yang Zhijin, Vice Minister of Culture, Weng Tiehui, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Zhou Heping, Director of the National Library and honorary chairman of the China Society for Library Science, Jiang Liang, Vice Chairman of CPPCC Shanghai and Director of Pudong New Area and Ms. NGIAN Lek Choh, a member of IFLA Governing Board attended the opening ceremony.

As the largest professional conference of the Chinese library community at the highest level, this year’s annual conference was organized by the Ministry of Culture, and jointly hosted by the Public and Cultural Affairs Division and Cultural Industry Division of the Ministry of Culture, Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film and TV, Pudong New Area Government, China Society for Library Science, the National library and the National Public Cultural Development Center of the Ministry of Culture. More than 3,000 people attended the meeting, including domestic and foreign experts and scholars in the library community, librarians, business representatives, as well as delegates participating in the workshop of the National Public Cultural Service System Demonstration Area (project). With “ China of Books– Reading Leads the Future” as the theme, this annual meeting aims at promoting the idea of "Universal Reading" and creating a good atmosphere of more reading and better books, in order to play a positive role in the development of “China of Books”. The annual conference consists of three sections, including working conference, professional conference and exhibition, with significant features of internationalization, informatization and socialization.

At the opening ceremony of this conference, Chen Rui, Director of the Military Medical Library, Feng Kang, Director of the Guizhou Zhengan County Library, Langdong Duojizhuoga, Director of the Tibetan Medical School Library, Duojizhuoga, Li JUnguo, Director of the Tianjin Children's Library, Li Donglai, Guangdong Dongguan City Library, Zhang Wei, Director of the Shanghai Pudong Library, and Li Zhizhong, Director of the Expert Committee, National Ancient Books Protection Office of the National Library received the title of "2013 Chinese Library Role Models".

The 2013 Chinese Library Exhibition held in the Shanghai Pudong area attracted many people in-and-outside the library community. The exhibition is divided into 5 sections, including corporate display area, theme exhibition area, international exhibition area, theme book exhibition area and interaction zone, covering a total area of 25,000 square meters, with altogether 132 enterprises and institutions in the field of library and information science.

In the after of November 7, various theme forums and professional sessions were fully launched. Delegates had lively discussions on such topics as  knowledge producing power and books leading to the future, ecological remodeling and the revival of reading, library academic service strategic transformation and the best practice, dialogue between libraries and the society and public mobile reading service.
