THE Hong Kong Public Libraries, one of the largest public library systems in the world, is live on Virtua since December 27, 2011.
The Virtua implementation includes all of the ILS features of Virtua as well as the Chamo Social OPAC running on Hewlett-Packard hardware configured to support HKPL’s 59 million annual circulations and 3.8 million patrons.
The 21-month implementation of Virtua involved substantial software customization to meet HKPL's operational requirements. In all, 309 specifications required custom development. Altogether 148 new design documents have been produced and all required customizations delivered, ranging from enhancements to request processing, to supporting circulation using the "Octopus card", a smart card widely used in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Public Libraries are composed of 67 libraries and 10 mobile libraries serving 3.8 million patrons. The library system is one of the world's busiest and registers over 59 million circulations per year. This circulation volume is nearly 3 times that of the Queens Public Library in New York City, which is the largest in the USA. The library and its branches hold over 12.5 million volumes and special collections.
