Introduction

These days novels and TV dramas about "tomb robbery" are so popular that a lot of people become rather curious about the excavation of cultural relics. Seeing so many "Joking stories" and "made-up stories" prevail, a professor who is an expert on this field starts talking: Archaeology is not just about digging up treasures.

Mr. Gao Menghe, a professor from the Department of Cultural Heritage and Museology, Fudan University, has long been engaged in archaeological field work. He will give a lecture at the Shanghai Library, telling the stories of archaeological discoveries, describing the process of archaeological excavation, commenting on the current situation of heritage conservation, and interpreting the value of heritage utilization.

Gao Menghe was born in 1958 in Northeast China, and a Mongolian by origin. He studied with Zhang Zhongpei, former Director of the Palace Museum, and Professor Ge Jianxiong of the Fudan University. He is now a professor and advisor to Ph. D. students in the Department of Cultural Heritage and Museology, Fudan University. He is also a council member of the China Archaeological Society, Vice Chairman of the Council of the Shanghai Cultural Heritage and Museology Society.

He has been long engaged in the archaeological field work, and has presided over the excavations of over 20 archaeological sites, including those involved in the Three Gorges and the south-to-north water diversion projects. His main research interests are in the pre-Qin archeology. In recent years, he has advocated for public archeology, opened an archaeological blog and participated in archaeological television interviews.

He has written a number of books, including Bronze Ware and Chinese Culture, Three Gorges Archeology, Archeology Is More than Digging up Treasures, etc. His new book Archaeology Is Fun published in 2011 gives a comprehensive introduction to archaeological discoveries and the life of archaeologists.

He has won the title of "My Favorite Teacher” of the 2011 Project of Shanghai Reading in Humanities Classics.
