The International Lithography Exhibition 2011

August 24~31, 2011
Venue: Exhibition Hall, West Wing, Shanghai Library

AN exhibition was held between August 24 and 31 at the Shanghai Library in memory of the 130th Birthday of the influential writer and scholar LU Xun, and the 80-year-old the modern Chinese woodblock print arts that LU Xun initiated in the 1930s.

LU Xun (1881~1936) was one of the pioneers of the ‘New Woodcut Movement’ in China throughout the 1930s and 40s. He established the ‘Woodcuts Assembly’ in Shanghai in August of 1931 to introduce the techniques and styles developed by the German Expressionists to the local artists, especially the patriotic young ones. It was labeled as the inception of the modern Chinese woodcut arts.

A total of 80 lithograph works were contributed by artists from some 30 countries, including Argentine, Japan, Poland, Thailand, Iran, and Korea, bringing the audience a wide variety of aesthetic experiences. Alongside were a number of classical painting works by famous Chinese artists, which, originally created by other means and on other medium, were converted into screen woodblock prints to display both the contemporary Chinese painting skills and the woodcutting craftsmanship.
