About the Lecture
The Idle Prince is the latest offering of Masahiko Shimada, a prominent Japanese novelist and poet, telling a story about the heir to the Japanese throne who left the royal family in a quest for the eternity of the world and the meaning of being alive. In his speech, the author will recount his experience of writing and reading in the bustling and hustling of metropolis by illustrating the social and civic nature of his novel.

He will also discuss with the local famous writer Mr. SUN Ganlu about writing novels of new styles and in new forms, such as the fantasy novels and cellphone novels.

The Lecturers

Mr. Masahiko Shimada was born in 1961 in Tokyo. During his studies in Russian and East European languages at Tokyo University of Foreign Languages, he published the novella A Tender Divertimento for Leftists (1983), which was named runner-up for the prestigious Akutagawa Prize. The following year he received the Noma New Writer Award for Music for a Somnambulant Kingdom (1984). He teaches at Hosei University and also serves as judge of the Akutagawa Prize and Yukio Mishima Prize.

Mr. SUN Ganlu, an iconic writer of the Chinese pioneer literature, member of the Shanghai Writers’

Association, and chief strategist at the Shanghai Weekly.

His works include the novel Breathing, Asking Women to Solve Riddles, Remembering the Lady of Qi, A Visit to Dreamland, Dancing on the Ceiling and Slower than Slow, Shanghai over the years.
