71% of the Earth's surface is sea water that measures 3,800 in average depth. Yet the human knowledge concerning the deep sea is far less than that of Moon or Mars. The sea bottom used to be considered as a lifeless and changeless ‘Death World’, but, with the deep-sea exploration and the development of deep diving technology in recent years, discoveries were found of the largest mountain at seabed, of bottom-up energy flow and material flow, of ‘hot fluid’ and ‘cold spring’ that erupt from the sea bottom, of ‘dark food chain’ independent of photosynthesis…30% of the world’s living beings live in the sea that constitute the ‘deep biosphere’ whereas the ‘black smokers’, ‘combustible ice’ and other biological resources are becoming a treasure for future human utilization.

Academician Wang Pinxian invites readers to explore the deep sea, the less known world, together and introduce to the latter the latest progress in the discipline.

About the Lecturer
Professor Wang Pinxian, graduated from Geology Department of Moscow University, is an expert on marine geology and professor with School of Ocean and Earth Sciences in Tongji University. As the founder of Paleo-oceanology in China, he made creative contribution to the domestic marine geology especially with his researches on paleontology and paleo-environment. He was elected to be academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991 and received numerous honors and prizes at home and abroad including Milankovich Medal endowed by Geological Society of Europe.
