On July 9, 2009, Dr. Mi Chu Wiens, director of Asian Division of Library of Congress, held a thematic lecture entitled China in 1904 Saint Louis Fair: 1900~1904 Late Qing Government & Sino-US Relationship in Shanghai Library. Present at the lecture were Dr. Wu Jianzhong, director of Shanghai Library and staff from Historical Documents Division and Expo Centre of the library. After a detailed study of donated books from late-Qing government, which are now collected by Library of Congress, customs records, media reports, official archives, and resources in the First Historical Archives of China, Dr. Wiens led a research to restore the historical scene of China's participation in 1904 St. Louis Fair. Not only was the event studied in particular, but the diplomatic tie and cultural life in that era were analyzed as well. Fresher to the audience was the representative style of the research. When the ancient paintings were revealed in an animated way, and the photos of 1904 Fair shown with a background music used back then, all present were brought back to 105 years ago. After a Q&A session, Dr. Wiens discussed with Dr. Wu on future cooperation on the research promotion.
