World Reading Day: Reading Brings Happiness

On World Reading Day that fell on April 23, 2009, a series of activities were held in China by local governments, libraries, stores and educational institutes with the purpose of encouraging the general public to read more and better.

The 1st Reading Campaign of Jiangxi Province was launched in Bayi Plaza with the theme of ¡°Respect for Knowledge and Innovation, Passion for Reading, Crackdown on Copyright Pirate¡±. Starting from April 23 till the end of September, the province plans to conduct a number of activities from book promotions, book sales, knowledge contest and lectures on copyrights.

Heilongjiang Provincial Library held a bookcrossing on World Reading day, providing over 1,000 adult books and 500 children¡¯s books for the event and thus drawing crowds of citizens for participation.

The 29th Book Fair of Shenyang was conducted in Shenyang Science Centrum, exhibiting selected 50 thousand new books from hundreds of domestic publishers, which covers arts, social science, children¡¯s literature and science & technology.

Villages gathered in the library room of Maizhu Villiage, Ninghe County of Tianjing. The little library contains over 30 thousand books and 20 titles of newspapers, serving as the ¡®Intellectual Fairyland¡¯ for the villagers. By far, the county has built 20 library rooms as such and plans to develop another 100 within 2009.
