In recent years, the issues of library spirit, librarians’ core abilities and professional ethics were widely discussed in the library circle. But there is always a distance between the theoretical discussion and actual practice, and it is hard to measure the real effects.
At the beginning of 2005, Dr. WU Jianzhong, Director of the Shanghai Library and Professor Fan Bingsi, Chair of the Information Science Department, East China Normal University conducted a correspondence to discuss the above issues. They found logic links between these issues and established the thesis “Librarians – Professional Spirit and Core Abilities”, which has great significance for the theoretical development of Chinese library science and the practice of library management.
With the correspondence between Wu and Fan as the beginning chapter of a special discussion, this book collects 12 papers written by library professionals at various levels. In addition, as the 2005 Library Theoretical Annual, it also collects papers on such theoretical issues as “open access”, “library evaluation system” and “historical document research”.
