Kunqu is one of the oldest extant operas in China, which is applauded as ¡°Mother of Operas¡± and tops the list of 19 Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity listed by UNESCO in 2001.
Mr. Bai Xianyong, the famous man of letters, would introduce to the audience his newly produced Jade Hairpin and share the beauty of Kunqu together with Mr. Zhao Yi, professor of School of Media & Design in Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
About the Lecturer
Mr. Bai Xianyong, Taiwan modern writer andprofessor with University of California, Santa Barbara, started writing in 1958 and created famous works such as Taiwanese, New Yorker and so forth that added to his fame in the literary world. Driven by his childhood interest in Kunqu, Mr. Bai wrote a series of commentaries and monographs on this artistic form. He took the role as main producer for the newly-made plays Peony Pavilion & Jade Hairpin and initiated the campaign of Peking University to revive Kunqu opera in 2009.
Mr. Zhao Yi, born in Taiwan and with a doctoral degree in Mass Communications from University of Southern California, is currently full-time professor with School of Media & Design of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
