The First International Library Opened in Shanghai
An international library in Shanghai opened on December 6, 2008 in Hongqiao, Changning District, home to 35,000 expatriates, 21 consulates and over 3,000 foreign-invested enterprises and institutes. The 'Window on China' International Library and Reading Center is located on the 8th floor of the new Changning Library, which allocated staff who speak English and some other languages to serve potential readers. To build a professional international library, planners have consulted information experts, teachers, students and community residents in Shanghai, the United States, U.K., Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries. As a cultural platform tailored to foreign residents in Shanghai, the Reading Center mainly provide documents in foreign languages on China, including the Beijing Olympic Games, Shanghai Expo 2010, tourism, culture, medical services, local transportation and so forth. It also features an one-step digital book search system and a borrowing and purchasing service that meet international standards.
