The First 24-Hour Library Met Shanghai Citizens
A 24-hour library was opened on April 6, 2010 in Lujiazui, Pudong New Area. The self-service library, known as the 'third-generation library', integrates the functions of card registration, information inquiry, appointment reservation, check-out, return, renewal and payment of fines. First of its kind in Shanghai, the 24-hour Lujiazui library comprises of a self-service machine with a capacity of 400 volume books, a logistics system, a central service system and a monitoring system. Readers could hand in a request via the inquiry system on the machine, which would then be passed to the central service system, and the book in demand will be delivered to the designated place. Such 24-hour libraries will be set up in other premises during the Expo, bringing libraries into homes of the Shanghai citizens. |
