FILM has dominated people’s spiritual life since its origin with its powerful and unique arts and aesthetics. The every step of evolution of the motion pictures -- from a purely visual art at the very beginning to the birth of the soundtrack, and from the black-and-white prints of reels to the natural color technology, the adaption of the wide screen, stereo, optical lens, mechanical and digital simulation … to name just a few, has created space after space for the development of film industry.
More than 100 years have elapsed since film set up its presence in China. And in this more than 100 years film has developed into a miracle of the history of modern and contemporary Chinese civilization. To commemorate the century-long development of the Chinese cinema, Shanghai Library and the Xiamen Library co-organise a retrospective exhibition featuring more than 600 film-related items.
This pictorial exhibition offers a look back to the early days of the film industry, and throws limelight on some precious movie posters of the last century as well as a reservoir of vintage film archives of the Xiamen City.
The items on show come from the collection of the Xiamen City Library, which includes pictures, posters, books, newspaper and periodicals. What is worth mentioning is those selected from Xiamen Library’s unique holding of 3,000 + movie posters between the 1970s and 1990s, which was contributed by the Xiamen Film Corporation together with a vast collection of stills, play scripts and other materials.
